چکیده

A series of Ru-(II) polypyridyl complexes, containing carboxylicand sulphonic ‘anchor’ groups, were synthesized as sensitizers for nanocrystalline TiO2. Depending on number and type of ligands the sensitizers are divided into three classes: tris-homoleptic complexes 1a–d, tris-heteroleptic complexes 2a–d and bis-complexes 3a–f. The compounds were characterized and the photophysical and electrochemical properties were examined. These studies proved the suitability of 1a–3f as sensitizers for TiO2-based photoelectrochemical ‘Graetzel’-type solar cells. A comparison of the performance of the complexes 1a–3f in the cell relative to Ru(dcbpy)2(NCS)2 3d as internal standard for mean efficiency η is presented, whereby Ru(dcphen)2(NCS)2 3f is shown to have an efficiency of ηrel.=62.3% relative to 3d. A possible reason for the particular efficiency of 3d as sensitizer is discussed. ©2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Ligand Engineering for the Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells with Ruthenium Sensitizers and Cobalt Electrolytes.

Over the past 20 years, ruthenium(II)-based dyes have played a pivotal role in turning dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) into a mature technology for the third generation of photovoltaics. However, the classic I3(-)/I(-) redox couple limits the performance and application of this technique. Simply replacing the iodine-based redox couple by new types like cobalt(3+/2+) complexes was not successf...

A ruthenium complex with superhigh light-harvesting capacity for dye-sensitized solar cells.

A dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) using Ru complexes as a photosensitizer was first reported by O Regan and Gr"tzel in 1991. The low-cost, easy preparation make DSSC one of the most promising photovoltaic cells for conversion of sunlight to electricity. Numerous sensitizers have been prepared, and their performance has been tested. A conversion efficiency of up to 11% was achieved by using cis...

Ni ( 0 ) catalysed homo - coupling reactions : a novel route towards the synthesis of multinuclear ruthenium polypyridine complexes featuring made - to - order properties

A new synthetic procedure for the efficient preparation of dinuclear ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes is reported. The compounds synthesized are [(bpy)2Ru(BPBT)Ru(bpy)2](PF6)2 and [(bpy)2Ru(BPZBT)Ru(bpy)2](PF6)2. (bpy = 2,2’bipyridine; H2BPBT = 5,5’-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-3,3’-bis(1,2,4-triazole); H2BPZBT = 5,5’bis(pyrazin-2-yl)-3,3’-bis(1,2,4-triazole). Electrochemical experiments show that the ...

In situ spectroelectrochemical and theoretical study on the oxidation of a 4H-imidazole-ruthenium dye adsorbed on nanocrystalline TiO2 thin film electrodes.

Terpyridine 4H-imidazole-ruthenium(II) complexes are considered promising candidates for use as sensitizers in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by displaying broad absorption in the visible range, where the dominant absorption features are due to metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transitions. The ruthenium(III) intermediates resulting from photoinduced MLCT transitions are essential inte...

Passivation of nanocrystalline TiO2 junctions by surface adsorbed phosphinate amphiphiles enhances the photovoltaic performance of dye sensitized solar cells.

We report a new class of molecular insulators that electronically passivate the surface of nanocrystalline titania films for high performance dye sensitized solar cells (DSC). Using electrical impedance measurements we demonstrate that co-adsorption of dineohexyl bis-(3,3-dimethyl-butyl)-phosphinic acid (DINHOP), along with the amphiphilic ruthenium sensitizer Z907Na increased substantially the...
